Judge Says Yoga Poses No Risk to Church-State Separation

Posted on July 10th, 2013 by

On July 1, a San Diego judge allowed a yoga program to continue in a Southern California school district.

Parents of two children in the Encinitas Union School district sued because they claimed the Ashtanga yoga classes being offered indoctrinate the children; however, the judge ruled in favor of the school district.

The couple’s lawyer told the judge that yoga is inherently religious and is a violation of church and state. The school’s defense stated that the program was put in place to promote a healthy lifestyle that helps students reduce stress and align their bodies.

According to officials, the school district has received more than 5,000 emails and letters from parents asking to continue the yoga program.
