We are talking about how Google indexes the billions of websites and web pages by crawling them with their analytic “spiders.” According to Google, “Crawling is the process by which Googlebot discovers new and updated pages to be added to the Google index.”

Googlebot is a program that scans (or crawls) the web for new content and feeds it into its index. As a spider is an essential element in our ecosystem, Googlebot is an essential element in the digital ecosystem.

Why is Understanding Googlebot Important to Website Design?

Understanding how Googlebot crawls is very important. If it is unable to read a web page, it will not process the page or it will make a note of it (meaning the page will not be ranked high on the organic search listings).

In other words, when Googlebot can’t read a website, that page is likely to not show up at the top of search queries. In cases such as this, a poorly designed page is more likely to be relegated to the far reaches of search listings, never seeing the light of day.
