• For children under 6, be sure that any ball is larger than 1.75 inches.
• Be sure to remove any mobile or toys hanging over an infant’s crib once they are able to lift themselves up.
• If there are any cords around the house that are longer than one foot, remove the knob or bead at the end to prevent possible strangulation.

Protection from poisoning and toxic chemicals:

• Be sure to read the labels and ingredients of toys and cosmetics to prevent exposure to toxic chemicals. Be sure to avoid any toys made from PVC plastic and cosmetics made with xylene, toluene, or dibutyl phthalate.
• Use a home lead test kit to test toys and jewelry for lead.
• Be sure that children to not insert jewelry or metals into their mouths.

Magnet safety

• If a toy contains small magnets that can be easily swallowed, be sure to keep it away from children under 6.
• If you suspect your child swallowed multiple magnets, consult a physician immediately, as this is a serious health concern.

Protect a child’s hearing

• If a toy is too loud, be sure to remove the batteries or cover the speakers to prevent injury to the ears of a child.

Recalls and warnings

• Be aware of current recalls. Keep up to date with recall information at www.recalls.gov.
• Be aware of warning labels. Explicit warning labels are required by federal regulations.
